The first point of call for most parents is and remains the newspaper for advertisements for nannies and caregivers for their children. Classifieds, word of mouth, referral, wanted ads on bulletin boards, industry publications, , magazines and such. HELP WANTED, NANNY, AU PAIR – AFTER-SCHOOL CARE, PART TIME CHILD-CARE, and many other headers will alert you of these types of examples and opportunities. Sometimes nannies and parents connect that way. You will have and attract a wide range of callers and applications depending on how you phrase your advertisement and what your screening process is like. It can be a long screening process. Set up an anonymous box for them to respond to, or voicemail service, not affiliated with any of your personal information, to not put your family/kids at risk for exploitation, safeguard privacy, etc. If you are looking for a well-trained professional nanny this is probably NOT GOING TO BE YOUR AVENUE OF CHOICE! Depending also on affordability and how deep/wide you want to cast your net for talent. There are numerous extremely helpful non profit organizations for whom it is their joy and pleasure to assist you finding the right care-giver for you and your family. Screening tools, ,training, background checks are all done for you, on your behalf and matching will have you ending up with interviewees closer to your CTQ’s (critical to quality factors) for your perfect-match nanny. Try and get on the list for practical student terms, as they near graduation, for their supervised practicum, with children. Sign your children up or see if there are some who are looking for full-time, part-time employment and give it a test-drive, while at home, low to no risk and low cost, just to also give you a feel of what if would be like to have a nanny in your home and around your kids. You might be surprised to find yourself less inclined and happy to have someone else disciplining or reprimanding, correcting your child, so in a sense this is a preparatory phase and stage for you too! (as a parent)! Candidates and young graduates from local nanny training programs and universities offering this program can be a great prospective talent pool. Student placement is affordable and reliable. The education is fresh in their minds and the cost is lower, saving you some hard-earned money, while still getting value and safe care for your children (not to mention lots of energy!) use the same safeguards as with other channels though. Ask and answer for yourself whom you are trying to attract and where you are most likely to find that particular candidate, best qualified and best-suited for the job. Foreign or out of towners, nannies from other states, provinces, out-of-country, global and internationally trained professionals, the choice and options are yours, (pending on what you can afford, actually want and feel that your children deserve of course, personal preferences and family requirements, unique specifications). Foreign trained nannies from the Filipinas, UK and other locations have long held the reputation to be worth their weight in gold for what they provide in the line of child rearing practices, loving care, development and general supervision that is so much more than just baby-sitting, setting the standards of excellence that so shapes the profession even today. Trained and certified elsewhere might give you something that the local talent cannot, (not necessarily at least), a worldview that is just that much broader. INS does not allow any foreign-trained nannies to work here. There are local laws and regulations to ensure that those choice opportunities go to the local-grown, talent first, before turning outside the borders of the country. There are however special cases and occasions that exceptions will be made. Work-visas are required and it is typically only valid for a pre-set amount of time (renewable), but there are no guarantees. Even if your kid(s) get attached, and they have to leave, it might not be enough to deal with preventing the separation when the contact, time is up. There are sponsorships but the processes are lengthy, complex and again at the mercy of the INS. Tourist visas do not allow individuals to work legally in the US. If you are found to be the employer of such an illegal, you are opening yourself up for prosecution by the courts and immigration. There will be finds and they will be deported without recourse back to their country of origin. For those attending a cultural exchange programs, they are typically on a student visa. It is only for a period of 1 year that visas are valid to work in someone’s home. It is not about the child care, but more about the cultural exchange and not a permanent solution or necessarily a dedicated nanny that you will be getting. The next stop for you might be a professional, diverse or reputable, niche specialist, nanny placement agency. They are typically a for fee arrangement and referral service provider. The levels of service and types of candidates that you will find will vary greatly too. They might be slightly expensive at first glance, but there are also myriads of great ways they can open up sources and candidates that you might otherwise not have ready access to. There are benefits and rewards to using and utilizing their resources (even if you have to pay for it) If it is of the utmost importance for you to find a nanny quickly, easily, of good training, quality and track record, with referral and formal expertise in child development, then this is a must. It will make your life a lot easier. You will still have to do most of the upfront work as to what you need and can afford, to see how best to utilize the services and referrals they provide. They get placement, commission, agency and administrative fees for their trouble and efforts that come from your pocket, as you will be the beneficiary of the processes and outcomes (searches, screenings, verifications, interviews, assessments etc. that are done for your family/household). It is targeted and tailored to your needs and much less random assignment or anyone off the street. They have screening criteria, admissions guidelines etc. for their prospective candidates and are mostly reliable sources for solid leads worth their value, beyond the papers and qualifications they carry with them! If it is important for you to actually find the nanny that fits your needs, family and kids best, then this is a viable option for you, even if it is just for fact-finding initially and getting an almost inside-look at what the types of services, candidates etc. they provide, for what amount of out-of-pocket, upfront, on-going, closing, finders’ fees etc. most charge. They often cater for both the needs of the nannies and the parents, creating a unique platform for the two paths to cross and potentially make a stellar connection that otherwise might never have happened. You might just find so much more than you were actually bargaining for. These offer families a lot, particularly specialty skills, training, expertise, experience, referral, peace of mind etc. Be sure to deal with a reliable, reputable agency and placement service. They are focused on matching client need with candidate skill-set. Specifically individualized attention and solutions or what you want. This is quite a cry different from placing a generic advertisement in a newspaper, or on a board and getting all types, sorts, ages, training levels and having to sift through them all yourself to find the right one and all the other due diligence prior to hiring the nanny. |
